The Corporation for National and Community Service (a Federal agency) just released its annual statistical profile on volunteering in America. The good news for 2008 is that volunteering through an organization held steady in spite of recent declines and the recession. There was actually a big jump in informal helping. A 31% increase was seen in the number of Americans who helped neighbors fix a problem or improve a condition in their neighborhood. Interested in testing your knowledge of American volunteering? Make Home Repairs for Senior Citizens

Lutheran Community Service's HOME Program provides minor home repairs for older adults living in the City of Wilmington and throughout New Castle County. The nonprofit is looking for a handyperson who possesses home maintenance and repair skills, owns basic tools, has transportation, is able to interact with the elderly, able to pass a criminal background check and provide references. NEW START Adult Learning Program provides one-to-one tutoring in basic reading, writing, and math skills for adults. The program is seeking someone to help match students to tutors, manage a participant database, create promotional materials, recruit volunteers, etc. BA preferred and strong computer and Internet skills required. Habitat for Humanity Volunteer

Now that you have time what will you do with it? Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County loves retirees! Can you help lend a hand on one of our construction sites? If you can, you'll be joining our talented pool of "regulars" who volunteer on a regular basis. Come help Habitat build new homes and rehabilitate some of the foreclosed houses in and around New Castle County. Our regulars come for the mission, but stay to learn new skills and make new friends.
