Many nonprofits are struggling in this economic downturn and the responsibility of governance can weigh heavily upon the shoulders of a board member. Just as the demand for nonprofit services is rising dramatically, many nonprofits are experiencing decreased charitable contributions and cutbacks in government and foundation funding. As early as December, 2008 a survey found that 52% of nonprofits questioned were already experiencing funding cuts. Since 94% of nonprofits have budgets of less than $1 million any reduction in funding hurts and can result in layoffs, salary freezes or cut programs. "Facing the Financial Crisis: 10 Smart Things Your Board Can Do Now" from Board Source provides some helpful advice for board members and Executive Directors in these uncertain times. Community Relations ManagerCategories: New Castle County Type: Paid Creekwatchers - Nanticoke Watershed AllianceCategories: Sussex County Type: Unpaid Volunteers are needed in the Seaford, Laurel and Bridgeville areas to become "Creekwatchers". Nanticoke Watershed Creekwatchers regularly collect samples of river water at established locations, analyze the samples, and produce a report on the river's health each year. Their work indicates where trouble spots are, which areas are out of balance, and helps citizens and local officials decide how to bring the river back to health. The Creekwatchers' Annual Water Quality Report continues to guide decisions on how our communities grow and develop as well as overall clean up efforts. Creekwatchers are trained by alliance staff to operate high-tech scientific water monitoring equipment.
